Welcome the many references to site restoration, but we think you should go further. Collectively, disused quarries represent a huge land resource and a huge opportunity for creating a sustainable new post industrial economy for local amenity, for a wide diversity of recreational activity and for a portfolio of wide ranging conservation initiatives. A fundamental point is that different activities can and indeed should be complementary. Our argument is for a presumption in favour of inclusivity in a multi use restoration vision and not exclusivity for any single new activity. It is good that this is recognised at para 1.2 but might usefully add the gloss that the benefits can be economic, social and environmental.
