Towards a Minerals Local Plan for Derbyshire and Derby

Derbyshire County and Derby City Councils have an ambitious agenda for sustainable economic growth.  The main objectives to help achieve this are the creation of new jobs and businesses as well as helping to support existing businesses. The Local Economic Partnership will help support the skills, house building and infrastructure needed to enable the economy to flourish.  The continued production of minerals is an important element in driving economic growth.

Derbyshire is one of the most important areas of the UK for investment by the minerals industry. Planning decisions about opening new sites or expanding existing ones face communities far more often in the Plan area than in other parts of England. The Minerals Local Plan will set out the detailed planning strategy and policies to enable the delivery of sustainable minerals development in Derbyshire and Derby over the Plan period to 2030. This means that the Plan will need to ensure that sufficient resources for mineral development are provided in order to maintain an adequate and steady supply of minerals over the Plan period to support growth, regeneration and economic development, whilst protecting the environment and local communities from any significant adverse impacts of extraction. In making provision for mineral development, the Plan will also take into account the wider environmental, economic and community benefits that mineral working can provide.

This rolling consultation represents the current stage in engaging the wider community of Derbyshire and Derby in developing the vision, objectives, strategies and policies of the Minerals Local Plan. The purpose is to invite comments and suggestions on elements of the Plan through a series of consultation strategy papers and their respective supporting papers (see below).

A Summary of Papers is available in the Consultation Documents Section, which you may find useful to read initially.

It would be useful if you could read the Foreword in the Consultation Documents section below, before reading the main papers.  You can either submit your comments on line using the links below or email  comments to  All your comments and suggestions will be used to inform the draft Plan, on which we will seek your views later this year, before it is published and then examined by an independent inspector.

When adopted, the Minerals Local Plan will provide the main policy guidance for assessing planning applications for minerals developments in Derbyshire and Derby.
