Minerals Plan: Towards a Strategy for Sand & Gravel

Minerals are essential raw materials, which are used for a wide range of purposes, such as in construction, manufacturing, chemical processing and power generation.  They are vital for economic growth and prosperity.  Derbyshire has a wealth of mineral resources.  Quarrying has, for a long time, been a part of the Derbyshire landscape and an important part of the economy.  Understandably, however, residents and local businesses are often concerned about any unwelcome impacts.  A clear, long-term Plan is a way of agreeing and helping people to understand the future role and scale of minerals working.  It is important in this respect that communities, businesses and people throughout Derbyshire are involved in developing the Plan so that their views are embodied within it.  The policies and proposals of the Plan are the most important factors to be taken into account when making a decision on a planning application.

A number of sites have been put forward by mineral operators for future sand and gravel extraction in the Trent, Derwent and Dove Valleys in the south of Derbyshire (see maps below).  All sites put forward must now be assessed to determine whether they will be included in the plan.  A strategy must be in place to guide the assessment and allocation of sites.  This will be an important part of the Minerals Plan.  A draft set of criteria for assessing sites are set out in the document below  We would appreciate any comments on these.

Between September and December 2012, we held a series of drop-in sessions in communities in the south of the county where sites have been put forward by mineral operators for future sand and gravel extraction.   We have provided below a summary of comments from these sessions.  A number of detailed individual comments were also sent to us after the sessions had been completed.  These are shown in the Excel table below.  We would be grateful if you could look through these and tell us if we have missed anything or if there is anything else you would like to be added.
